Swimming (SWIM)

I joined this group this year to get a better understanding on what professional data solution teams are like for professional sports. Becoming a Data Scientist for a sports team is something that I have always wanted to do, so this was an excellent experience for me. This season, it was great working with like-minded individuals who shared this passion. Furthermore, I was also excited to work with a sport that was new to me, as I love hearing about how analytics is used and how I can get them become better swimmers through the use of analytics.

Projects

Team Swim Ranking

My main project this year was working on a rankings system on Excel that ranked our swimmers based on a weighted average of their FINA score, their attendance, and their coachability determined by Jacky, and the rest of the coaching staff. The purpose of this was to see who Jacky should invite to practices that took place on Friday’s, as that practice was reserved for the people that showed the most commitment to the sport.

We also created a similar project to help Jacky determine who she should invite to OUA’s. That still used a weighted average, we accounted for their FINA historical (all-time) FINA score, and their FINA score at meets they competed at this season. We did this so we can get an accurate representation of their performance as the historical performance does not get an accurate representation of their recent meets.

Reflections

  • Overall, I am very proud of how much I learned this season about how swimming works on the basis of analytics, and that I was able to help Jacky make proper roster decisions for OUA’s.

  • For next season, I hope to be able to get an API done to be able to extend upon the analytics that TritonWear has, and I am excited to enter next season with more confidence in my own abilities after how much I learned about Swimming as a sport.
